About the origin history of the Documentation Archive

The Documentation Archive for Fine Arts (briefly ADBK) resulted at the end of 1979. It established themselves by a donation of various art books, art and auction catalogues, artist biographies and newspaper items. The supply was registered, archived and enlarged with a manual card index (approximately 32.000 artist) by biographies of Painters, Illustrators and Designers. This documentation material remained up to now the basis of the art archive. In the process of the last years, it was enlarged further and further and finally extended with a press archive (exhibition references, biographic memos, criticisms etc.), new catalogues and Artist monographs.

The Documentation Archive for Jewish Culture and History (briefly ADJKG) was set up in 1984 of the available materials of the ADBK. Already during the reorganization of the whole archive, was considered the aspect  to create a "particularly Jewish department".
This archive (ADJKG), which at the beginning also consisted only of Painters, Illustrators and Draughtsman was soon extended by the following fields: Sculptors, Artisans, Silver- and Goldsmiths, Medailleurs; and at least were still added: Architects, Art Collectors and Art Historians.
In addition, quasi as a sub-archive, was now also a Literature- and Author Archive (only Jewish) added, for what - since 1984 - important press reports and information materials had been collected.

In 1985, it was possible that East European Periodicals (Annuals, Bulletins, etc.) could be bought too - retroactively even back to 1945.

Finally the archive could be enlarged with the topic fields »Contemporary History« and »Right-wing Extremism«, and could also be extended with a corresponding library.

During the last years, the Documentation Archive  and the library enlarged enormously; and also the volume the newspaper and press archive extended itself; and an extensive tape and video archive was finally still added; where interesting TV programs and time witness reports are collected.

Although the Documentation Archive  estimates an economical accounting, it often comes for finance problems. However, this also means that important documentations, literature, special catalogues, books and newspapers can not be commanded and bought more.
In such a way there are no other possibilities as to wait for better times, in order to get further necessary things for the archive.
Over the way of a book review (for different press organs), some interesting books can now and then be acquired for the library.
Further, many new and preferably important second-hand books remain inaccessible for the Archive.
That is, in addition to financial and spatial needs, one of the main problems the
    Documentation Archive.

Nevertheless: some could in recent years be achieved by own initiatives, too through idealism of the different free employees and through the occasional donations of patrons and conveyors.
